Winter is right around the corner, and with it, faux fur. It's no doubt that anything faux fur dominates this season, how could it not? Not only does it add the perfect balance to an outfit with texture and color, it's also practical because it helps to keep you warm in the cold (a great way to justify your purchase to your dad 😉). I love a good faux fur moment as much as the next person. You know what I don't love? Not being told the truth. You may be asking yourself, Miranda, where did this come from? Why the 180? Weren't we just having a nice conversation about the chicness of faux fur? Yes, we were, and I can go on and on about how to best style it, what clothing items it stands out the most in, etc. What I can't do is continue to allow you to keep living this lie you didn't was being told. What kind of respectable blogger would I be if I let you keep living in the dark?

Just when you think that this world couldn't get any crueler, it does. It is with a heavy heart that I have to share with you all that faux fur is not the ethical or sustainable alternative we are all told it was. It can be argued that it's worse than real fur. You see, according to my research, we've been duped. A series of investigations conducted by the Humane World for Animals (formerly Humane Society International), it was discovered that several big-name retailers like Amazon, TK Maxx, and Groupon were selling items labeled as "faux fur" that were actually made using rabbit, fox, and mink fur. Popular fashion brands like Boohoo and Missguided were also caught red-handed doing this. And not to add insult to injury, but the "faux fur" we were all buying is actually ridden by chemicals that are famously known to shed microfibers.
